Elves
From Snowblossom
The elves - the wood elves or Ferandir (literally "forest people") in the Elven tongue - are a race of humanoids related to the eladrin and the drow. They are one of the three races who split from the Telwadir.
There is some confusion of terms where "elf" is concerned. The word "elf" is used by the other races to mean the elves, eladrin and drow as a whole. But amongst those races themselves, the word "elf" means the specific race of the elves. Often, the elves are called "wood elves", the drow are called "dark elves" and the eladrin are called "high elves".
According to elven legend, the Leshii were a race of powerful fey creature who were at war with the Fomorians in the Feywild. The war threatened to tear apart their world. To protect their young, the Leshii brought them to the The Eye (with the permission of Mother Dawn) where they were given the first city, Telwar, and became the Telwadir. The Leshii returned to the Feywild to fight the Fomorians.

Subraces
There is little argument about the origins of the elven subraces - the wood elves migrated to other areas and were affected by the climates (or in the case of the bone elves, by the magics) found there.
Bone Elves (Nezrandir)
Bone Elves are an offshoot of the Wood Elves who were touched many centuries ago by necromantic magic. Bone elves are gaunt and white-skinned. Their name comes from the bony horns that grow from their foreheads or scalps. The Bone Elves are shunned by many other elves and tend to live in their own communities.
Sea Elves (Caladir)
elves who live in the eastern islands
Sun Elves (Syrendir)
tall desert elves
